Prepare a readable scanned form before filling it

October 31, 2026

Inspect the source scan

Open the scanned PDF and look at every page before adding text. A scan is a picture of a form; Document Forge can place text, checks, dates and a visible signature on top, but it cannot recognize the printed words with OCR or repair a blurry image. If small labels are unreadable at 150% or 200% Zoom, request a clearer copy. Guessing a question from context can put a correct answer beside the wrong label.

Check the page orientation and edges. If the bottom of the original form is cropped, an added mark cannot restore the missing instructions. Ask the sender for a complete scan. Keep the original attachment so you can compare it with the finished copy.

Place answers where the printed page allows

Use Add text for non-fillable lines and Checkmark for printed boxes. Choose a text size that fits the space, enter a short answer and switch to Select & move for alignment. Zoom in while placing it, then inspect at Fit page. For a tall scanned page, use the page controls rather than assuming the view is still on page one. Today’s date is useful only when the requested date is the current date; otherwise type the required date with Add text.

Do not try to hide a printed mistake by putting new text over it. The original pixels remain underneath. Ask the issuer for a corrected form when the source itself has an error. Avoid placing an answer over instructions you may need to read later.

Check legibility after export

Review & download and follow its links to pages where you added marks. Then open the downloaded PDF in a separate viewer. Check whether thin text remains readable over the scan’s background, whether any checkmark sits inside its box and whether a signature covers printed wording. If the form is meant to be printed, inspect it at ordinary page size as well as zoomed in.

A scan with no interactive fields remains a scan after export; Document Forge does not convert it into an editable form. Keep the clean original and the completed copy. If the final page is too faint to read, return to the issuer for a better source rather than relying on more marks to make it usable.

A high zoom level can make a weak scan seem acceptable on screen. Check the finished page at normal size, because that is closer to how most recipients will encounter it.
