What to do when a PDF will not open

October 31, 2026

Check that you picked a PDF

A filename ending in .pdf is a useful clue, but a renamed picture or damaged attachment is not necessarily a PDF. If Document Forge says the file is invalid, open it in a trusted PDF viewer first. If that viewer also fails, download the attachment again or ask the sender to resend it. Avoid repeatedly choosing the same broken copy and assuming the editor is still loading.

The file remains in your browser during editing; Document Forge does not upload it for repair. A document that opens elsewhere may still use a PDF feature this editor does not support. Read the specific message before deciding what to request.

Check size, page count and protection

The editor accepts standard unencrypted PDFs up to 25 MB and 100 pages. For a larger file, ask for a smaller document or a relevant excerpt from the issuer. If it is password protected, request an unencrypted copy from someone authorized to provide one. Do not send a password to Document Forge or assume that visible access in another viewer removes encryption.

XFA forms use a different form system. Ask the issuer for a standard PDF, or use the application it recommends. A document that already has a certificate signature is rejected because editing it could invalidate that signature. Get an unsigned original if more information genuinely needs to be added. Do not strip an existing signature to make the file pass.

Choose a safe next step

If the PDF opens but a blank line will not accept typing, that is a different problem. It may be a scanned page or a printed line with no interactive field. Use Add text to place an answer, or follow the guide about typing into a PDF. If only one page is unusually blurry, ask for a clearer scan; the editor does not perform OCR or restore unreadable text.

When you receive a replacement, open it as a fresh session and check the page count and first page before making many edits. Keep the source attachment. After editing, review the changes and open the downloaded file to confirm that the replacement was the one you actually completed.

If you are unsure which restriction applies, record the exact error wording for the sender. It is more useful than saying only that the file is broken.
