What does flattening a PDF actually do?

October 31, 2026

You fill out a PDF, download it, and then reopen it to change one answer. The answer is still there, but the box no longer behaves like a form field. That is usually the moment flattening stops being an abstract term.

Document Forge flattens form fields when it prepares your download. The values become part of the page’s appearance instead of remaining interactive boxes. Your added text marks and visible signatures are drawn onto the pages as well.

Why that matters when you send a form

A finished form should show the answers you entered without asking the recipient to fill the same boxes. Flattening helps produce a copy with those entries visible. It is still worth opening the saved PDF in a viewer and checking it: an unusual file, font or page layout can need a closer look.

Flattening does not check whether the answers are right. It does not confirm that a signature belongs to you, verify the recipient, or submit the form. The review screen counts changes and helps you return to edited pages; it does not approve the content.

Keep the original and the completed copy

Keep the blank or original PDF somewhere you can find it. The downloaded copy normally has -completed.pdf added to its name. A clear name is useful, but open it to make sure you are looking at the latest saved version.

If the editing tab is still open, you can keep changing your working document and prepare another copy. That is the easiest time to correct an answer. The earlier downloaded file does not update itself when you make more edits.

If you have already closed the tab, opening the completed PDF will not restore its old interactive fields. You can add more marks, but you cannot use Document Forge to rewrite the flattened answer underneath. Start from the original when an existing answer needs replacing.

Flattened does not mean protected

Do not use flattening as a way to hide confidential information. Putting a white box or another mark over something is not a reliable redaction process. Document Forge is not a redaction tool, and a flattened PDF is not a promise that nobody can edit, copy or inspect its contents.

It also does not turn a scanned page into searchable text. If the source was a picture, flattening will not perform OCR on it. Likewise, a visible signature added here is not a certificate-based digital signature or an identity check.

A quick way to see the difference

  1. Open the editor and choose Try the sample.
  2. Fill one name field and add a text mark on page two.
  3. Choose Review & download, then prepare and save the PDF.
  4. Open the saved copy in a PDF viewer and inspect both pages. Compare the appearance with the working editor.

Only clear or close your working tab after saving what you need. There is no server copy of your document or its unsaved edits.
