Why can’t I type into this PDF?

October 31, 2026

You open a form, click the blank line, and nothing happens. It looks like a place to type. That doesn’t mean the person who made the PDF put a field there.

Before you spend time fighting with it, figure out what kind of page you have. You can usually get the information onto a standard PDF without printing it, but the right way to do it depends on the file.

Start with the highlighted fields

Open the file in Document Forge and choose Select & move. Click a highlighted text field and try typing. Existing checkboxes, radio buttons and dropdowns have their own controls. Fill those directly when they are available; there is no reason to cover a working field with another text mark.

If a line has no editable control, choose Add text and click beside it. Enter your answer, then move it into place. This adds your answer over the page. It does not rewrite the original wording underneath.

If it is a scan, treat it like a picture

A scanned form often looks exactly like a paper form because that is what it is: a picture saved inside a PDF. Use Add text for answers, Checkmark for printed boxes, and Signature where a visible signature is appropriate. There is a worked scanned-form example if you want to see the sequence.

Document Forge does not turn that picture into editable text. It does not recognize handwriting, remove an old answer or repair a blurry scan. If the original is hard to read, ask for a clearer copy before filling it out.

If the file will not open

Check the message rather than repeatedly choosing the same file. The editor supports standard, unencrypted PDFs up to 25 MB and 100 pages. Password-protected files, XFA forms and PDFs that already contain a certificate signature are not supported. Ask the sender for an unsigned, standard PDF when that is the problem. Do not remove a signature just to force an edit through.

A file being readable in another viewer does not guarantee that every form feature will work here. For an unusual form, its issuing organization may require a particular application.

Check the saved result, not just the editor

Choose Review & download, check the page links and prepare your copy. If saving does not start, use Save prepared PDF. Open the downloaded file before sending it. Look for missing letters, text outside its box and marks covering the printed instructions.

Keep the original too. The downloaded form fields are flattened; reopening that copy will not bring back the original editable fields. And download before closing this tab: there is no server draft to recover later.
